YELLOWSTONE RIVER BRIDGE

P-Tn is flying in the mountains!  This is just a news flash for those of you who might remember the disastrous flooding that occurred in Montana two years ago.  The Yellowstone River coming out of the National Park by the same name hit historic levels and over the course of a few hours flooded the Yellowstone River from the North Entrance to the Park at Gardiner, Montana, to Livingston, Montana – 50 miles north – and well beyond that, including the City of Red Lodge, Montana!  In the process, the historic Carbella Bridge over the Yellowstone was beaten into submission by trees, logs, and other debris which pushed it off its foundations and flipped it into the river.

Two years later, the Carbella Bridge replacement is nearing the milestone of preparation for the concrete deck pour, with completion coming by fall of 2024.  In this VIDEO, we’ve included a single aerial view of the washed-out bridge shortly after the flood, along with recent aerial video footage showing the state of reconstruction this June, plus a set of ground level photos.  In my humble opinion, the design of the new bridge captures the flavor of the old classic truss style, while clearly improving the structural integrity and expanding the deck to a width adequate for two-way traffic.

When it finally opens, it will serve the residents and visitors to the Tom Minor Basin area for many decades to comeThe extra 10 or so miles to navigate to the only optional bridge route will no longer be needed – a welcome change for manyLearn more about the 2022 Yellowstone River flooding at this (and other) online resources.
