Travis has been our Head Aerial Photographer at P-Tn for decades … although we have multiple FAA Certified UAS-Drone Pilots, and Tim has done his share of fixed-wing aerial photography. For the most part, we currently fly drones for nearly all our aerial still photo and video capture. However, there are some situations where a drone simply cannot get the job done, primarily due to altitude restrictions or potential interference with conventional aircraft operations. Our pilots know the rules and regulations and we follow them on all drone assignments, to ensure safety.

This photo illustrates a prime application for the use of fixed-wing aircraft for aerial work – instead of a UAS-drone. It is also a one-in-a-million shot that captures the project under construction at the moment a landing aircraft’s shadow is at the ‘front door’ of the building. What’s more … the aircraft casting that shadow is also captured in the shot – the blue fuselage and white wings clearly visible against the background of an uncultivated crop field adjacent to the project site. What timing!
The ’why’ behind this shot is simply that the project is on the flight path to adjacent KCI Airport north of Kansas City. The altitude restrictions for drone flight at that location made it impossible to capture the expanse of this huge warehouse construction project. Employing a fixed-wing aircraft for the aerial progress shoots allowed Travis to fly higher, capture the entire project (plus closeups with a telephoto lens when needed), and stay well above the flight path of aircraft landing or taking off. Catching this shot with both the aircraft and shadow, while orbiting the project for progress photos from all angles is where the one-in-a-million timing comes into play … along with Travis being alert to the opportunity when it came together.
Aerial Photography has been part of our P-Tn Service Lineup for 50 Years!
You may have caught a recent post on LinkedIn by Jeff Redhage, Senior Director of Construction Management at Hunt Midwest; “Clayco has made great progress at our Ace Hardware Corporation building in the KCI 29 Logistic Park. Truck dock paving continues to be placed, underground utilities on the north side of the building are nearly complete which will allow for the final areas of subgrade to be stabilized and graded, roofing is over 50% complete and the exterior windows and painting work continues to progress.” Our P-Tn aerial progress photo was shared in that post. The Ace building will be the largest distribution facility by building footprint in all of Kansas City upon completion later this year.
We’re pleased that P-Tn is playing a small part on the project team! If we can do so for you, please get in touch and let’s have a conversation. We’ve been doing ‘what we do’ at P-Tn for half a century – learn more about what we might do for you at P-Tn.com.
